Ian Lerner on King’s Cross (May 2006)
Ian Lerner, a property consultant, adviser and estate agent, with offices in Clerkenwell, speaks from forty years experience about development in London. He was volunteered to advise on the P and O Scheme in King’s Cross, now called the Regent’s Quarter, and modestly admits that his ideas proved to be right. He was a major influence in saving Clerkenwell from being bulldozed, and creating it as a thriving residential and working community. He stresses the importance of railway and underground stations in promoting communities, and shows how this is important in King’s Cross Central. |
| |
Marian Larragy and Angela Inglis of Camden Community Radio interviewed him in his Clerkenwell office. They began by asking him to talk about his overall experience and then to discuss Clerkenwell and King’s Cross Central. |

Information about Conservation Area Advisory Committees
Conservation Area Advisory Committees are set up under the Planning Acts to give advice to Local Authorities on matters relating to conservation areas. Members are normally made up of local and wider representatives from a variety of fields and expertise, including architects, artists, archaeologists, historians, social anthropologists, etc. They meet to discuss policy and advise the Planning Department on heritage issues of specific planning applications. Conservation Area Status of King’s Cross
King’s Cross is a surviving area of major historical, archictectural, industrial and archaeological significance. It is a microcosm of 19th Century transport history, including the canal, horse and rail transport. It has buildings of truly monumental importance. For example the two train stations and the Granary. King’s Cross has Conservation Area Status in recognition of the setting in which these building stand and the contribution of the lesser buildings and streets and the need to protect this built and social heritage.
